Are you wasting your life in a job that suuuuucks?

“But… I worked so hard to get here! Yeah I feel drained and dread going to work… but… This was my dream job once.”

Or you’re working in nonprofit, or work that is noble and needed, but you feel burnt out (and feel guilty for feeling burnt out!).

Just because you have a job you ‘should’ feel lucky to have, or that you worked hard to get, doesn’t mean you have to stay. Just because you once loved your job doesn’t mean it will always be the right fit forever.

Are you ignoring and gaslighting the part of you who is miserable?

“It’s not that bad, other people have it way worse.”

“I should be grateful I even have a job.”

“The grass is always greener, whatever else I find will probably end up being just as bad.”

“I can’t stand most of the people here, but people are people so it will just be the same anywhere else.”

“I just need to care less. Everyone hates their job, I just need to get the paycheck and not care so much.”

“I have worked so long to get to this point, I can’t start over from the beginning!”

Sound familiar?

I said all these things to myself, as I was crying in my car on the way home from work, more times than I care to admit. And I stayed for far longer (years!) than I should have because I convinced myself I was the problem and I just needed to be more grateful, or care less.

We are so conditioned to get along, to make the best of it, to put others’ feelings and needs first. And what happens when we consistently neglect or even actively talk ourselves out of hearing our own cries for help? Burn out. Depression. Anxiety. Exhaustion. Just surviving our lives instead of living them.

And I am here to tell you it doesn’t have to be this way.

Just because other people are doing something they hate to earn a living, doesn't mean you have to accept it too.

Just because other people think you should do a certain kind of work, doesn’t mean you should.

Just because other people are ok with just getting a pay check and not doing work that means something to them doesn’t mean you have to.

Just because you have spent a long time getting to where you are, doesn’t mean you have to start completely over.

And just because it is scary, doesn't mean you can’t change your life (and feel better for pushing through the fear!)

Unless you are lucky enough to not have to earn money to live, you will have to spend a significant amount of your life working. Your life is precious. Why spend it doing work that drains you so much that you have no energy or interest in anything outside your job?
